One step at a time, screen awake
Open a recipe in cook mode for big type, one step at a time and a checklist to gather everything first. The screen stays awake while it is open.

Add milk and vanilla to the well beaten egg yolks.
Sift in the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients.
The recipe and nothing else
Your hands are covered in flour. The screen goes dark, and the recipe is a scroll of ads and life story with the steps somewhere in the middle. Cook mode shows the recipe and nothing else.
Gather your ingredients first
Cook mode opens on a checklist of every ingredient, each with its quantity written the way a recipe card writes it. Tick each one as you set it out on the counter. The ticks stay on your device, so if you leave to answer the door and come back mid-cook, they are still there. They clear themselves within half a day, so an old cook's checklist is never mistaken for tonight's. Nothing about what you gathered leaves the device.
Gathering is optional. Start the steps whenever you like, ticked or not.
Follow along one step at a time
Each step fills the screen in big type. Nothing else. Press Next for the next step and Back for the one before. While cook mode is open the screen stays awake, so you are not unlocking the phone with a wet thumb between steps.
Finish, and post it
The last step offers to post about it. Post, and the recipe page counts that cook: when you last made it and how many times. Your friends see the plate. Those posts are where the recipe box's cook history comes from.
On every recipe, on a phone or a computer
Cook mode is there on every recipe you can see, whether you wrote it or a friend shared it. Cook mode works in a browser on a computer too: press Start cooking and the recipe shows in one column of big type, as it does on a phone. Get a recipe off a card and into the app by scanning it, then cook from the screen.
Questions
Does it really keep the screen on?
Yes, for as long as cook mode is open, in browsers that can keep the screen awake. While it is keeping the screen awake, cook mode shows “Screen stays on” at the top. Close cook mode and the screen sleeps as it normally would.
Can I go back a step?
Yes. Step back as far as you like. Going back from the first step returns you to the ingredient checklist with your ticks as you left them.
Do I have to tick off the ingredients?
No. The checklist is there if you want it. You can start the steps with nothing ticked.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Forktales runs in the browser on your phone or your computer. On a phone, add it to your home screen from Safari or Chrome and it opens like an app, with its own icon.
